W BENNETT & CO HUNTER SWISS CHRONOGRAPH POCKET WATCH, cased by Louis Weill London 1887, 18kt gold, total weight 121.4 grams, watch in working condition, case very good, only some light surface wear. Inside case engraved 'Presented to George Wilson Esqr Inspector of Mines as a mark of the esteem in which he is held by the mine owners & mine managers of the Ohinemuri District 1896'. George Wilson 1836/37 - 1905, born in Scotland, migrated first to Australia in 1855 engaging in mining before joining the 1st Waikato Militia Regiment 1863 and serving with the Forest Rangers, receiving the New Zealand Medal. In 1868 George arrived in Thames playing an active role in the mining community and wider town affairs. George was appointed mining inspector for Hauraki from 1886 to 1896 when he was appointed Chief Inspecting Engineer for the Mines Department. He retired in 1899. Outside case engraved 'Archibald Burns', 1867 - 1950, who was born in Auckland, was a member of the Legislative Council and step son to George Wilson. In Thames he owned a grocery store from 1894, served as Mayor 1905 - 1909, was a member on many boards and later returned to Auckland where he was heavily involved in education. He was a grand officer of the New Zealand Freemasons in the late 20's/early 30's.
