Struck on the initiative of Sir Joseph Banks & distributed on Captain James Cook's second voyage, this example is ex Tennants Auctioneers, UK Lot 35, 13 December 2019, 42.5mm, 30.6g. The top edge shows traces of the original suspender ring, but like many, a drill hole allowed suspension above George III's head, with the typical wear pattern being more evident on the Rev, from wearing King's portrait outermost, leaving a strong Obv. GB Tichborne Claimant Medallion 1871, Obv, portrait of child, legend "The alleged rightful heir aged 5 years" & Rev portrait of Arthur Orton, legend "The Tichborne Claimant", BHM 3051, Eimer 1639 (with incorrect date 1874). Orton migrated to Australia but returned to England at the invitation of Lady Tichborne who was convinced he was her long-lost son. He faced two trials, the first civil lasting 102 days where he fraudulently claimed to be the heir to the Tichborne fortune, followed by a criminal trial of 188 days, in which he was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for perjury.
