NEW ZEALAND MEDAL undated, impressed in small capitals to 1550 PTE G. SMYTH. 58th FOOT. George Smyth appears on the medal roll for men who served with the 58th Foot in the 1845-7 New Zealand campaign. He appears on a list of men who were wounded, published in the New Zealand Spectator & Cook’s Strait Guardian, 21 Jun 1845, though it is unclear where & when he was wounded. He served with the 58th Foot for 8 years & then remained in New Zealand in the Auckland district. In 1877 he was recorded as winning the Otahuhu Agricultural Society ploughing contest & in 1896 was in Otahuhu. gVF

NEW ZEALAND MEDAL 1861 TO 1866 impressed SERGT. D. RUDDOCK, 3RD, WAIKATO REGT, XXXXXd out, SPEC impressed. Daniel Rossiter Rudduck was arrested for larceny in 1853 but apparently served in Crimea with his brother who was killed there. He emigrated to New Zealand & is on the medal roll as a Sergeant with the 3rd Waikato. He settled in Oamaru & died there in 1915. AU

Arthur Harrison was a civilian bullock driver with the Imperial Commissariat Transport Corps, with the original cardboard box of issue, as purchased by vendor in Wellington in 1981, in good condition but edges split. Handwritten naming on box is in the original style, no rank or unit named on the medal. EF

NEW ZEALAND MEDAL, Imperial issue, undated, impressed 1485.DRVR. JOHN MOORE, RYL.. ARTILLERY. John Moore bn County Down, Ireland, about 1830, enlisted with the Royal Artillery in Ireland on 26 May 1855. Entering as a Gunner, he was promoted to Bombardier on 1 July 1859 & Corporal 20 Jun 1860, but after a Court Martial on 12 Aug 1860, he returned to being a Gunner. Present with the Field Force under Sir T. Pratt at Taranaki (Waitara) from 13-19 March 1861, he was discharged from the RA due to ill health on 31 Aug 1864, holding two good conduct badges. Mounted as brooch on Rev, pin broken, bruises at lower Obv, otherwise VF.

William Fraser Ross, 1840-1893, joined the Gabriel's Gully gold rush in 1862 & was the Champion Shot of Westland. His son, William James Fredrick Ross (1864-1934), one of 4 officers of the 4th contingent to South Africa from 23 March 1900 until 1 April 1901, later joined the militia & served as Quarter Master Sergeant at Trentham. In civilian life, he was a Manager for the Royal Insurance Co, in boxing, athletics & opera, & sang the role of Mikado. A rare group. aEF - EF

He was in the 43rd Reinforcements for the NZ Mounted Rifles. Also entitled to Boer War Medal (clasps unknown). Merson bn in the Wairarapa, worked as a linotype operator in Levin & Gisborne & died from influenza aged 43 on 27/11/1918. His remains are buried in Suez War Memorial Cemetery. With newspaper clippings about his life & death at Suez, application letter to serve in South Africa in 1900 pack & envelope for plaque. AU

He was wounded on 25 July 1915 & wounded again at Anzac Cove. On recovery he joined the 10th Battery of the 3rd Brigade Field Artillery as a Bombardier (23 Sept 1916), until he was wounded in his face, neck & forearm from a shell strike. Evacuated again, he was invalided to New Zealand on 10 March 1917 & struck off on 30 May 1917 as unfit. Near UNC
