NEW ZEALAND MEDAL 1845-1847, impressed R. HANDFORD, CAPTN. F. CL., H.M.S. RACEHORSE. Richard Handford, bn 1809, enlisted with the navy in 1825 as a Boy 3rd class, & rose through the ranks, serving in many vessels to reach Captain of the Forecastle. He retired from the navy on 19 May 1856, with 27 years, 10 months of service. This is his only medal, one of 36 to HMS Racehorse. Provenance: I S Wright, Sydney 29/12/1993. EF

NEW ZEALAND MEDAL 1845-1846, impressed J.LACEY. A.B. H.M.S. HAZARD. Joseph Lacey served on HMS Hazard, whose main action was defending Russell, then known as Kororareka, during which six men from the ship were killed & about 15 were injured. Hazard crew received 35 of this date. Note that the full stop after S in naming is an inverted comma. He served in Malta, Crimea, East Indies, & New Zealand (6 yrs, 63 days), totalling 21 yrs. He received the Crimea Medal with the Sebastopol clasp (as a Corpl), the Turkish Crimea Medal, & the New Zealand Medal. He was discharged at Woolwich on 4 Dec 1876. VF

NEW ZEALAND MEDAL undated, impressed C. LONG. 3RD WAIKATO. MILA. Charles Long, bn Portsmouth 1841, died Auckland 1915, joined the 1st Waikato in about 1862 (Service no 381). By exchange he left the Regiment & was attached to the 3rd Waikato Militia & the Imperial Commissariat Corps. He was present at Gate Pa (1864), Orakau (also called Ake Ake, 1864), Irihanga (1867) & Whakamarama (1867). Remaining with the Armed Constabulary, he transferred to the Taranaki district in 1878 & Kawhia in 1884. Discharged from service on 18 Feb 1888, he went goldmining in Thames. NEW ZEALAND MEDAL undated, engraved in black capitals, J.CURLEY. 2D. WAIKATO REGT. John Curley, bn 1837, died Wellington 1915, gave his birthplace as Tillingham, Kent. Other records suggest Roscommon, Ireland. A bushman, he enlisted with the 2nd Waikato at Howick on 28 Aug 1863. He fought at Nukumara & Kakramea. In 1871 he was in the newspaper because he & Alfred Crew had been shot at while shooting for pigeons. He received a Crown Land grant at Te Awamutu. Provenance: I S Wright, Sydney 3/05/2000. EF

NEW ZEALAND MEDAL undated, engraved in black capitals, CORPL. J. WALDEN, WELLINGTON RIFLES., MYB123. James Walden, bn Wellington 1 Oct 1843, died 1914 in Miramar, was an active sportsman & good shot. He served with the Victorian sloop “Victoria” in 1860-61, then joined the Wellington Rifles & served under Captain George Buck during the Titokowaru campaign. He was injured at Te Ngutu o te Manu where Major von Tempsky & Captains Buck & Palmer were killed. Walden was alongside Buck when Buck was killed, and despite being severely injured, Walden retrieved Buck’s sword from the battlefield. After the end of hostilities, on 25 June 1877 he was appointed Sub-Lieut, rising to Lieutenant, & commanded the Wellington City Rifles at Parihaka in 1881. Resigning in 1885, he was employed as a private detective. He was tried but found not guilty of attempting to tar & feather Sydney Nimmo Muir at the Addington trotting grounds. It was alleged the “wife of a well-known legislator residing in the Hutt has been subject of considerable attention on the part of the gentleman, and, in spite of constant reminders that these attentions were not welcome, he refused to desist.” By 1896, Walden was a tally clerk. Arriving in New Zealand in 1875 & naturalised in 1885, he worked in Dunedin as a gunsmith & later as an electrician. Hospitalised with injuries on 24 Sept 1917, he returned to the front & was KIA at the Somme on 14 April 1918 when with the Entrenching Battalion. Horace William Yaxley, bn Kaikoura in 1891, joined the Canterbury Mounted Rifles on 17 Aug 1914. He was wounded in action on Walkers Ridge on 14 May 1915, & again on 29 August 1915. After reaching Sgt in the Egypt/Palestine region, he died of typhus on 12 March 1919. James Dundas Arthur (bn 1891 Cromwell) was also wounded in action at Gallipoli (11/12/15) & the Somme (27/9/16). Walter Batchelor was also wounded twice on the Western Front in 1917 & later died in Onehunga (More details online). VF - aEF

Dr Ralph Stuart Stephenson, bn Victoria 1867 & educated in Tasmania, won a scholarship to Edinburgh University where he took an MD degree with honours. A highly respected Dunedin physician, he established a Sanatorium at Flagstaff, enlisted with the NZ Medical Corps in 1917, & was discharged on 9 November 1918, returning to Dunedin where he died on 17 January 1924.
