NZ DCM & MM WWII Group of 10 to John Alexander Redpath. Redpath defied the odds in two outstanding escapes from captivity, the second of which resulted from work undertaken for MI9 special operations to rescue stranded allied soldiers in 1943-44. The double decoration group of importance to both New Zealand & Great Britain collectors includes his Distinguished Conduct Medal, impressed 30836 SGT. J. A REDPATH. 2 N.Z.E.F. 1942., Military Medal impressed 30836 S/SGT. J. A. REDPATH DCM. 2NZEF 1944., NZ War Service Medal 1939-1945, Defence Medal 1939-45, War Medal 1939-45, Africa Star, 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Greek War Medal, & 1953 silver Coronation Medal, all EF. Redpath was born in Canterbury in 1904 & died in Wellington 9/04/1969. Born into a well-known trading family, Redpath claimed to be 3 years younger than he was to secure his enlistment (No. 30836) on 11/04/1940 into the 19th Army Troops Company, 2NZEF. Quickly promoted to Sergeant, he disembarked in Egypt on 30/9/1940. After the defeat of allied troops at Maleme Aerodrome, Crete, Redpath & his remaining company went to ground. Captured by the Germans, Redpath successfully coordinated & executed an escape from Galatas POW camp, evacuating to mainland Greece. Redpath's party commandeered a vessel & sailed to Alexandria, surviving strafing & bombing three times. Under Redpath's leadership, the crew made it safely to Allied-controlled North Africa. This effort & continued efforts by Redpath to rescue more stranded soldiers from Greece earned him the DCM in 1942 (439 awarded to New Zealanders during WWII). While engaging in classified MI9 operations, he was captured again by Italians & held as a POW in PG75 & 35 for 18 months, finally effecting another successful escape on 3/11/43, earning the MM. After 1856 days abroad, Captain Redpath was honourably discharged on 22/8/1946. NZ DSO & DFC Group of 8 to James Bayntun Starky, DSO GVI 1943, DFC 1943, G VI, with case (both officially replaced 1989), 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star 1939-45, Africa Star 1940-43, Defence Medal 1939-45, War Medal 1939-45, Midi, & NZ War Service Medal 1939-45.
Exceptionally well documented group, with ribbon bars & MID; RAF & NZ cloth insignia “wings” & identity disk; service records; award certificates for MID 11 June 1942, DSO & DFC; letter about replacement of DSO & DFC 20 March 1989 from NZ Ministry of Defence; Book by Wing Commander H P ‘Sandy’ Powell,“Men With Wings”, Allan Wingate, London, 1957 with chapter on Starky; two RNZAF logbooks covering August 1940 to July 1944 with military & civilian entries July 1944 to April 1990, including as a jet test pilot for Armstrong Siddeley until the mid 1950s, citations for the award of the DSO & DFC; correspondence including with Starky by recovering wounded crew members, photograph album with details of a prototype Canberra bomber which crashed with Starky as pilot in 1954, & other photographs of Starky.
Starky's 1942 MID recognised his Middle East flying, including a crash landing in which two crew were killed, which he survived, then walked 12 miles while injured to seek help for crew & to locate the Wellington Bomber. The DFC recognised 42 sorties against highly defended targets, many in Germany, & returning successfully on 5/6 September after losing 6 feet of his right wing. The DSO recognised his skill & leadership in returning his seriously damaged Lancaster after losing his Navigator & Wireless Operator following a German night fighter attack. Private Thomas Campbell, born 1881 Wellington 1881, lived in Karori, worked as a clerk & is listed in the 7th Contingent’s mounted rifles. He sailed with the 8th Contingent in 1902 aboard HMS Surrey. Returning home, he enlisted in WWI as No. 78018. He died 16 June 1940 & is buried in Karori Cemetery. EF

N.Z.M.R. 8TH CONT: William Henry Toohill was born 1879 in Wellington. He worked as a Chemist in Wellington, enlisted with the 8th Contingent regimental staff & departed Auckland February 1902 aboard HMS Surrey. Toohill was assigned as a vital Corporal Hospital Dispenser. He died 27/7/1936 & is buried in Whanganui's Aramoho Cemetery. gEF

James Alexander Graham was born 2/4/1891 in Waitara, enlisted into the Auckland Regiment, 15th Coy. He disembarked with the MEF at Gallipoli 5/5/15, was wounded in the shoulder during the second battle of Krithia 8/5/15 & was off strength for 3 months while recovering at Helouan hospital. Evacuated off Gallipoli, transferred to France & promoted to Corporal by 1/4/17, he took leave to attend officers' school. Graham was awarded the MSM & promoted to Sergeant for valuable service in the field by 28/7/18. After 4 years 162 days, Graham was discharged 10/4/20 & died 12/10/65 in Tauranga; WWI group (3), 1914-15 Star, BWM, VM, medals impressed 11/499 TPR . J. T. GRAHAM. N.Z.E.F. & three entered paybooks. John Telfar Graham, brother of J.A Graham, was born 16/2/1894. Enlisting 18/8/14 into the Wellington Mounted Rifles 2nd Squadron, he disembarked in Alexandria 30/12/14, & was transported with the WMR to ANZAC Cove. He participated in the battle of Chunuk Bair & was shot during its defence on 16/8/15, dying in Alexandria 4 days later; & WWII group (2 items) Dog tags & entered paybook named to Alexander John Graham, son of J.A. Graham (No. 446727), born 25/8/22 in Morrinsville, joined 1/9/41 the 1st Battalion Hauraki Regiment, the core of home defence, final army pay entry 19/10/45. L. DAVEY. N.Z.E.F, to Lester Davey (22/8/1894 - 14/10/18), also enlisted 23/8/15 as a Rifleman into the 3rd NZRB 1st Battalion D Comp. Serving in France & Belgium, he was wounded in the thigh/buttock 15/9/16, recovered in England. Trained in England’s Cannock & Bracton camps, promoted to Corporal 3/11/17. He was wounded again in the hand by a grenade. Mortally wounded during the battle of Bourlon Woods (Cambrai), he died in Oct 1918, aEF; & BWM, impressed 73036 PTE. V. C. Arnold Walter Frank Davey (NZ44753) was born in Dannevirke 19/7/1924, son of Walter Ainsley Davey. He served in WWII from 12/02/1944 with the NZ 6th Flying Boat Squadron, conducting mostly air-sea rescue operations, deployed to Espiritu Santo, Bougainville, Green Island & Halavo Bay & was discharged as a Captain, 18/03/1946. Reenlisting 29/08/1950 as a Lieutenant in the NZ 16th Field Regiment K Force, his unit fought in the Battle of Kapyong April 1951. He departed Korea 06/05/1952, continuing service as a Captain with the Territorials until discharge on 19/07/1974. Arnold became an Associate Professor at Massey University & died 27 November 2009 in Palmerston North. Included are artillery cap badges, collected Korean War propaganda material, scans of Arnold's field diaries from Korea, gEF; & NZ Defence Service Medal with Regular clasp, impressed 30627 CAPT CL DAVEY NZDSC, cased with Miniature. Colin Lester Davey, brother of A.W.F. Davey, was born in Dannevirke in 1929. In 1954, with the NZ Army, he conducted research on meat with Cambridge University at the Low Temperature Research Station of the UK DSIR. He became an internationally renowned Biochemist, Director of the Meat Industry Research Institute & President of the NZ Institute of Chemistry. Retiring in 1987, he died in 2024. NZ WWI Trio 1914-15 Star, BWM & VM impressed 4/1516 SJT. H. G. WHITTINGTON. N.Z.E.F. Renowned All Black Hugh George Whittington was born 1885 in Hawera, enlisting 23/8/15 in the NZ Rifle Brigade, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Reinforcements. He disembarked from the SS Willochra in Suez 20/12/15 for additional training, transferred to France 6/4/16, & actively served, & was wounded, until 25/11/16. He was detached with the NZ Club Football team, the "Trench Blacks", to face a French service team on 8/4/17 before 60,000 spectators in Paris, winning 40-0 in the "Somme Cup". During 1917 Whittington reached temporary Corporal & Sergeant. Badly wounded 12/10/17, he was in hospital for 6 months. Promoted to Sergeant 18/12/18, Whittington competed for NZ in the victorious 1919 King's Cup Empire Tournament, & the 1919 South African Tour, NZ winning 11 of 14 games. Hugh George Whittington died 24/5/1959 in New Plymouth. Service history provided, toning. EF

NZ WWI Trio, 1914-15 Star, BWM & VM impressed 2/340A 2/LT. R. H. DUNCAN. N.Z.E.F. Roy Hunter Duncan was born 1/2/1892 in Motueka to Thomas Duncan, Resident Agent for administration on the Cook Islands from 1914-23. Duncan enlisted in the NZ Field Artillery Battalion 3rd Battery. Disembarking in Egypt 22/5/15, he saw action in Gallipoli at ANZAC Cove & transferred to France/Belgium 6/4/16. He was rapidly promoted to Sergeant 24/11/16, followed by admission to officer training with an artillery commission. Promoted to 2/Lieut 18/9/18, he transferred to the NZFA 4th Battery. He remained in the Territorials until retirement in 1928, dying 15/2/1965. Service history copy provided. EF

Norman Alfred Miller, born 25/02/1890 in Wallsend NSW, enlisted 15/8/14 in the Wellington Mounted Rifles 6th Squadron. He left Wellington aboard HMNZT Tahiti 23/9/14 & reached Gallipoli in May 1915. Miller's unit participated in the capture of No. 3 Post. Admitted for Gastro/Chronic Dysentery 4/8/1915, the day before the Chunuk Bair attack, he transferred to Lemnos, then Helmieh hospital Cairo. Deemed unfit, he was honourably discharged after 231 days' service on 1/4/16 & died in Palmerston North 6/4/1960. Copy of service history provided, some toning. gVF
