NZ Police Long Service & Good Conduct Medal with 22-years’ service clasp, engraved NO. 1011. CONST. J. O’BRIEN. N.Z. POLICE. 1916, OD93, GT White type, with bar suspender, 4mm thick. John O’Brien, bn Greymouth 26 Oct 1870, died Gisborne 1946, served 3½ years with the Permanent Militia (possibly in Lyttelton) before joining the Police in Feb 1902. He served at Christchurch, Oamaru, Avondale, Kaikohe, Auckland, Taumaranui & Devonport. Becoming a Sergeant in 1916, he retired in 1935. He represented the West Coast, North Otago & Wellington at Rugby & played one game for New Zealand against New South Wales. EF
