John Mulrey served with the 43rd Foot in the Indian Mutiny at Goiwasa. He served in New Zealand from 11 Dec 1863 & in the engagements at Makatu & Te Ranga. NEW ZEALAND MEDAL, Imperial issue, 1863 TO 1864, impressed J.BENNETT. GUNR. R.M.A. H.M.S. ESK, MYB123, Ex Dix Noonan Webb 22 July 2016, printed research notes available. John Bennett was born in Wheel, Romford, Essex in about 1834. He enlisted with the navy in 1853, at which time he was a labourer. He transferred to the Royal Marine Artillery in 1855. He served in the Baltic Sea, 1854, China Sea 1857-58, & was present at the capture of Canton in Dec 1857, & New Zealand War, in 1863-64. He was awarded the Baltic medal, China Medal with clasp Canton 1857, & New Zealand Medal. He was discharged from the Navy at the completion of his term of service in Feb 1874. Ex brooch mount Obv, also affecting two letters B & E of BENNETT, otherwise near VF.

NEW ZEALAND MEDAL, ND engraved JOHN RULE NO.1 CO. AUCK NAV. VOL., MYB123, sl nick rev, rare unit with only nine issued according to BBM, late issue 1913, with removed 1861 TO 1866 dates just visible. Rule was present at Pukorokoro (Miranda Expedition), South Manukau Harbour, Waiuku, Mauku & Drury 1863 & may have been involved in the capture of the large waka Te Toki-a-Tapiri, on display in the Auckland Museum. He was born in 1844, in Cornwall & migrated to New Zealand via Australia in 1856. He died in Auckland in 1925. VF

NEW ZEALAND MEDAL, Imperial issue, 1865 TO 1866, impressed 910 JOHN HIGGINS 57TH REGT., MYB123. Higgins, born Glasgow in 1836, enlisted 8 Aug 1864 with the 93rd Foot (service no 2834) then transferred to the 57th Foot (910) & later the 72nd Foot (1518). His early service saw six court martials for minor offences but at discharge his service was described as "latterly good". He served in Bulgaria & Crimea (2 years, 4 months), East Indies (6y, 10m), New Zealand (2y, 7m) & a second term in the East Indies (4y, 8m). Discharged on 5 Sept 1876, he received a partial pension from a severe gunshot wound to his left forearm at Alma. Ex Dix Noonan Webb 22 July 2016. Printed Research Notes available. VF

A. KNOWSLEY. N.Z.E.F., & N.Z.A. ROYAL VETERAN CROSS, Rev engraved A. KNOWSLEY, OD129, rare combination. Albert Knowsley (1879-1935), bn Plymouth, England, served with the Imperial Yeomanry & in South Africa from 6 March 1900 to 4 March 1901. He was in battle on 29 Nov 1900 at Rhenoster Kop in northern Transvaal. He enlisted for WW1 on 13 Aug 1914, serving until 10 Oct 1916 when discharged unfit. Prior to WWI he was a Wellington City Tramways Storekeeper & in WWI was a Records Clerk for the Engineers in Egypt (1914 & Oct 1915-April 1916) & Gallipoli (April-Sept 1915). William Augustine (Gus) Ferry, born Dunedin 1888, died Kaikoura 1980, enlisted in the Canterbury Mounted Rifles on 19/09/1914 & served in the Egyptian theatre 1914 to 1916. James George Balfour 1896-1960 first enlisted in the UK with the 442 Agric Coy Labour Corp in 1914 then with the Camerons in 1915, ending the war as a T/Sgt with the Highland Light Infantry, mainly serving in France.
