CB & CMG GROUP (12), to Brigadier General Frederick Hugh Gordon Cunliffe (1861 - 1955), son of Maj-Gen G.G. Cunliffe & great grandson of the 3rd Baronet Cunliffe of Liverpool. After serving in the ranks early in his career, Frederick rose to Brigadier-General having led successful campaigns against German troops in Togo and the Cameroons in WWI. Included in the group are: The Most Honourable Order of the Bath CB (Military) Companion’s Neck Badge, silver-gilt enamel, with neck riband; The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael & St George CMG Companion’s Neck Badge, silver-gilt enamel; India General Service Medal, with Hazara 1891 clasp, engraved to 2nd Lieut. F.H.C. Cunliffe, 2nd Bn, Sea. Highrs; India Medal, Victoria, with Relief of Chitral 1895 clasp; Queen's South Africa Medal, with South Africa 1902, Transvaal & Orange Free State clasps; Africa General Service Medal, with Nigeria 1918 clasp; 1914 - 15 Star, British War Medal 1914 - 20 & Victory Medal, with oak leaf representing 4 MID's; France Legion of Honour Commandeur Neck Badge, some chipping of enamel; Croix de Guerre 1914 - 1918 with palm; & Italy Order of St Maurice & St Lazarus Officer. Cunliffe was rejected for Sandhurst, then served from 1879 successively as a subaltern in the 1st Warwickshire Militia 9th Lancers & 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders in India. His commission came in 1889 in the Seaforth Highlanders. Active service continued in South Africa where in 1902 he served in an irregular force, Steinaecker's Horse. From 1904, he moved to the West African Frontier Force, reaching Lieutenant Colonel by 1910. In the Cameroons, he controlled forces on the northern Nigerian frontier. In November 1915, his forces captured the German stronghold at Banyo Mountain. After 1916, he moved with a Nigerian volunteer force to the successful East African campaign, finishing WWI as a headquarters Brigade Commander. Further research and family records available. GB INDIAN MUTINY MEDAL 1857 - 59, impressed to LIEUTT. GEORGE GORDON CUNLIFFE, KUMAON LEVY, MYB 121, silver, with ribbon, gVF. George Gordon Cunliffe (1829 - 1900), father to Brigadier General F H G Cunliffe, was later Major General in the British Army. On 20 May 1847, he was appointed Cadet in the Bengal Infantry. On 16 Jul 1850 he became a Lieutenant. In 1857, the Indian Mutiny broke out and Cunliffe was appointed Lieut in the Kumaon Levy, an irregular force, described by R Walpole, the Brigadier-General, as "young and inexperienced boys". It was originally raised and operated in the defence of the Kumaon Hills against rebels in 1857. On 31 Aug 1858, the Kumaon Levy was one of three units in the front line at the Battle of Seerpoorah under the command of Lieutenant Cunliffe. He took over command of the Force when Capt Samuel James Browne was wounded. Capt Browne, after whom the Sam Browne belt is named, was awarded the VC for his role in this action. Sergia Wesley Lockwood (1896 - ?), born in Latrobe, Tasmania, was a clerk upon enlistment with the Australian Army in October 1914. The DCM was awarded "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed courage and determination in laying and maintaining communication lines under heavy enemy shell fire". After the war, Sergia returned to Australia, married, then immigrated to Dunedin around 1933 working as a welder. During WWII, he enrolled in the NZ Army as a 2nd Lieut, posted to the 4th Battalion in the National Military Reserve. aEF - AU

A.I.F., MYB 168 & 170, silver & bronze, with ribbon. Frank Broomfield (1880 - 1969), born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, enlisted with the 7th Field Coy Engineers of the Australian Imperial Force in May 1915. He left Alexandria for Gallipoli in Sept 1915, was hospitalised in Tel-el-Kebir with meningitis in Jan 1916, and wounded in Apr 1916, later proceeding to France in Nov 1916. On 20 Mar 1917 he was reported missing, but it was discovered that he was a POW held at Minden, Germany, and
wounded on his left side. He was repatriated to England in Aug 1918. In 1921 he immigrated to NZ where he worked as a civil engineer with the Public Works Dept. VF - EF

Gustavus Robert Harrison (1872 - 1945), born in Barrington, Tasmania, was a labourer upon enlistment with the 8th Infantry Battalion in Sept 1914. He lied about his age claiming to be born in 1879. The 8th Battalion landed in Egypt on 2 Dec 1914, took part in the First Suez Offensive, transferred to Lemnos Isl & under the command of Lieut Col W K Bolton landed at Anzac Cove in the 2nd wave on 25 Apr 1915. They then fought at Krithia, Lone Pine and then on defensive duties. Harrison was admitted to hospital in Oct 1915 suffering from shellshock and neurasthenia after he was "blown up". He was treated in the field & in England returning to Australia in June 1916. VF - EF

He was awarded the Military Medal on 29 Mar 1918 for his role in the offensive in Picardy, Battle of the Somme 1918. On 23 Apr 1918 he was reported missing, believed killed, then thought to be a POW and unwounded. However, on 17 Sep 1918 German sources reported that he was dead, presumed on 23 Mar 1918, but his body was not recovered. gVF - EF

James Paul Petrie (1882 - 1970), born in Dunedin, NZ, was a bridge builder upon enlistment with the 1st Pioneer Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in October 1915. He was in France by March building and repairing trenches at night and returning to billets during the day. After 2 weeks he transferred to Ypres where he continued his trench work for 6 weeks. He was under constant shell fire. He was hospitalised in France, England & Canada but discharged after recovering from neurasthenia. aEF - EF

GB WATERLOO MEDAL 1815, impressed to ** JAMES ARUNDLE, 10th ROYAL REG. HUSSARS. **, MYB 99, silver, with original clip & contemporary straight bar suspension & ribbon, e/k's. James Arundle fought in the 10th Royal Hussars as part of the 6th Cavalry Brig commanded by Major Gen Sir Richard Vivian Hussey which charged the French cavalry and infantry at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The regiment was posted on the Duke of Wellington's left flank, later in the afternoon moved to support the centre line which was under pressure from Napoleon's Imperial Guard, making the final charge of the day just south of La Haye Sainte with Vandeleur's Cavalry Brigade, Adam's Infantry Brigade and Wellington's lead for the last stand of the Guard. During the battle, the 10th Hussars with a unit of 390, suffered 94 casualties, 22 killed, 46 wounded & 26 missing. Arundle was also entitled to the Sahagun & Benevente 1808, Vittoria 1813 & Toulouse 1814 clasps. Ex Seabys 1975. gF
