AUSTRALIA, City Bank of Sydney, One Pound, January 4 1864, Serial 291, imprint of De Gruchy & Leigh, Sydney, Renniks MVR1. The note is new to market with a strong provenance. It was originally issued to Wine & Spirt merchant Charles Thorne at the bank's opening, as shown by Thorne's handwriting on the back, "First City Bank (One Pound) Note issued over the counter to Charles Thorne Wine & Spirit Merchant No. 2 Dangars Stores 10 Clarence Street Sydney Monday morning 10 O'Clock 1st February 1864", with signature & date 1/2/64 Sydney NSW below. Further writing on the front top & right margin & on the back appears to be by members of the family of Elsie Florence Joseph (1885-1963), who married Frederick Joseph Nathan (1871-1938), founder of the Glaxo company which established New Zealand's first dried milk plant & ultimately became a part of major British pharmaceutical company, GSK. The City Bank became part of the Australian Bank of Commerce in 1918, absorbed by the Bank of New South Wales in 1931 & now Westpac. No images of issued type one One Pound notes have been published & no listings or sales have been recorded by Vort-Ronald, covering the period at least as far back as 1972. With envelope marked "The first Bank Note issued by the City Bank of Sydney", label 087 on reverse. Three main vertical folds, central fold with short split & one main horizontal fold, small holes along fold lines, pin holes at top left, but no major pieces missing & design features all strong. Unique issued note of the highest rarity. aF
