Ernest Ewing (1891 - ?), born in Co Donegal, Ireland, joined the Royal Horse Artillery in July 1908, was listed as a gunner in the U Battery of the Royal Horse Artillery in Dilkusha, Lucknow, India, in the 1911 census and enlisted as a gunner with the Royal Horse Artillery in 1914. Gunner Ewing was wounded on 25 February 1915 and so was entitled to wear a "wound stripe". VF - gVF

NZ QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899 - 1902, impressed to 9377 PTE J. COX. 2ND REGT 10TH N.Z. CONT:, 3rd type rev, MYB 150, silver, with ribbon. John Cox (1881 - 1917), born in Papakaio near Oamaru, enlisted for the Boer War in April 1902 and served with the 2nd Regiment 10th NZ Contingent. He enlisted again for service in WWI in October 1916 and went to France with the 1st Battalion of the Auckland Regiment (Service no 29671). He was buried anonymously by the 3rd Escalon of the 2nd ANZAC Corp and he was declared to have been killed in action on the 4 October 1917 in Belgium. aEF

Henry Milne Burt (1891 - 1958), born in Edinburgh, Scotland, was a carpenter upon enlistment with the NZ Engineers No 3 Field Company in August 1914. He embarked for Gallipoli on the 9th May 1915 and was admitted to hospital sick on 25 Aug 1915, but returned to his unit four days later. He was admitted again sick on the 6 Sept 1915 with influenza and enteritis. He was promoted to Corporal on 2 March 1916 and to Sergeant on 28 Oct 1917. He was wounded in action with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and shoulder in France on 11 May 1918. gVF - EF

Frederick George Sinclair (1894 - 1918), born in Dunedin, was a lino operator with the Otago Daily Times upon enlistment with the 1st Battery 1st Brigade of the NZ Field Artillery in September 1914. The 1st Brigade landed at Anzac Cove over 25 & 26 April 1915. He returned to Egypt in January 1916 and went to the Western Front in April 1916 where his unit was involved in action at Messines and Passchendaele. He died of wounds following action on 9 January 1918. EF - AU

Henry Walter Tudor (1882 - 1962), born in Dunedin, was a range fitter upon enlistment with the 18th Reinforcements Otago Infantry Regiment D Company in June 1916. He embarked to England in October 1916 and then left for France in February 1917. He joined the 1st Battalion Otago Regiment 10th Company on the 3rd June 1917. He was wounded in action at the Battle of Messines on 7th June 1917 with a gunshot wound to the hand which resulted in the amputation of his index finger. He was discharged in 1918. VF

Philip Henry (1895 - 1955), born in Shorecliffe, England, was a civil servant in the Government Printing Office upon enlistment, but had been a volunteer with the NZ Engineers. He was awarded the Military Medal, Gazette 31227, 11/03/1919 "For conspicuous gallantry and continuous good work during the recent operations from 14th August to 7th September, 1918 in the Puisieux and Bapaume Area. On many occasions when owing to heavy enemy artillery fire telephone lines were out Corporal Henry, as linesman, went forward and repaired the wires. At Puisieux, on the morning of 14th August and in front of Metz en Couture on 7th September, this NCO with another Corporal went out through a barrage and at great personal risk repaired the lines, thus re-establishing communication at a vital period. NZ MILITARY MEDAL Operations West of Bapaume, GV Uncrowned, impressed to 6-4108 PTE J.W.J.MCLEELY. I/CANTERBURY: R., MYB 55, silver, with ribbon. John William Joseph McLeely (1883 - 1939), born in Queenstown, was a labourer in the Public Works Department upon enlistment with the 10th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion C Company in November 1915. He served in both Egypt and the Western Front, where he fought at the Somme and Messines, returning to NZ in 1919 and discharged in 1920. He was disciplined twice for minor offenses while on active duty. He was awarded the Military Medal for acts of gallantry in the field on the 15th September 1918. "Operations West of Bapaume 25th August 1918. For gallant conduct and devotion to duty. After gaining the objective this soldier showed great determination and fearlessness in carrying the wounded back under heavy shell fire. He worked continuously for over twenty hours, during which time he also removed wounded from other units, and who had been lying out 48 hours.
