$80,000.00
Lot Type: C
1906 1d Christchurch Exhibition claret x 3 singles on cover. This folded cover is addressed to "E Righton, Exhibition" cancelled 20 April 1907. Centre stamp damaged and cover shows signs of ageing, which with appropriate conservation techniques can be greatly enhanced. This cover was last seen in NZ on display at Kiwipex 2006. The cover bears 3 of the 12 known used examples. Since Mowbrays last sold this cover in 1998, no other used examples have appeared on the market. Jury catalogues $40,000 each stamp used, but with no examples on the market for nearly 20 years, this estimate may be considered conservative. THIS LOT WILL BE AUCTIONED AT 2PM.

1949 3d HMS Vanguard, mint. This, the 4th of only 7 recorded, was prepared for the 1949 Royal Visit to New Zealand & Australia. However, owing to the King's deteriorating health, the tour was cancelled. Accordingly all stocks of the 4 stamps for the Royal Visit were ordered to be destroyed. A small handful protruding from the furnace door were "liberated" and all bear some crumpling as a result. In March 2017, Mowbrays sold the 3rd of the 7 known examples in private hands for $67,850 including buyer's premium. THIS LOT WILL BE AUCTIONED AT 2PM.
