SPORTS MEMORABILIA AUCTION #1
29th November 2022 – commencing at 7pm
Mowbray Collectables welcome you to our first Sporting Memorabilia Auction.
After 55 years as experts in the philatelic and numismatic business, we are excited to add sporting memorabilia to our offerings. There is no shortage of opportunities in the sports memorabilia market in New Zealand, and it is an area of huge interest worldwide.
We have worked closely with our trusted vendors to bring you over 146 lots. The passion of our vendors is evident in the calibre of their lots.
Some highlights of the auction are:
· Lot 1 – A rare 1950 British Empire Games gold medal to New Zealand rower William Carroll, the first NZ rowing gold at any games.
· Lot 33 “Leatherbound autograph book c1920s” a beautiful lot, including 1928 All Blacks, 1930 Lions, Charles Kingsford Smith and more.
· Lot 58 “Run for your life” this publication boasts involvement with 2 of NZs greatest sporting personalities in Arthur Lydiard and Don Clarke.
· Lot 99 “Muhammad Ali V Joe Frasier II - Unused ticket”, from the famous 1974 match, a wonderful piece of boxing history.
· Programmes, balls, jerseys and medals for NZ and overseas athletes in rugby, football, cricket, shooting, basketball and more.
These lots would enrich any collection.
Given the level of interest and eager enquiries we’ve had from so many of you throughout this process, we are confident there is a passionate market for an auction of this kind in New Zealand. Thank you so much to all our vendors and buyers for your support and enthusiasm. Already we know there will be something for everyone.
Thank you also to all our staff who contributed to this catalogue, including particularly Brendan Watson, David Galt, Liam Jennings, Michail Andreef and Maree Malin.
Good Luck & Happy Bidding!

Timed Auction Bidding
No bidding in person is possible for this auction as a timed only auction. Online bids can be placed through the bidding platform auctions.mowbraycollectables.com until the auction closes, or alternatively if needed through us by mail, phone, fax, or email and we will place them through the bidding platform on your behalf. Such non-live online bids should be received in our office no later than 8am Tuesday 29 November (GMT + 13 hours) (at your risk if not received by the auctioneer in time). Telephone bidding is not available.
We strongly recommend bids are placed directly online, as this achieves more immediate placement. Posting bids by mail is available but not recommended as postal systems are slow please allow at least one week in New Zealand and much longer from overseas, and advise the lot number, your maximum bid, email, phone and address details. Bids will be placed at one bidding increment above the reserve or next highest bidder up to your maximum bid.
For this auction, no surcharge applies for bidding through Auction Mobility.
How Timed Auction Bidding Works
- Register to bid online on at auctions.mowbraycollectables.com
- Download the bidding app if needed for mobile phone bidding.
- Place your maximum bid online. Your bid will be placed at one increment above the next highest bid. (eg if you bid $200 and someone else has bid $100, your bid will be placed at $110 and rise to your maximum bid only if other parties bid again). You will be notified by email if you are outbid and you are not online but will get notice within your bidding App if you are online (We cannot provide that notification if you do not register directly to bid online and do not provide an email address).
- Lots will close sequentially from 7pm New Zealand standard time on 29 November 2022 at approximately one-minute intervals but lots will auto extend if bids are placed in the last 10 minutes of the auction of each lot by a further ten minutes to allow other bidders to respond. The bidding Apps will show how many minutes remain until the closing time for each lot.
- The online bidding Apps on your phone/tablet or computer allow you to choose how lots are displayed – whether by price, time to close or in lot order. You can change that order so that you can see which lots are closing first, given that some lots may auto-extend, so that you can better keep track of all lots you particularly want to buy.
- You will be notified by email if successful and invoiced for your purchases, including freight amounts, unless you choose to pick up lots from our Otaki premises directly.
