Lot Type: C
1745 Soldier's letter & historical document. Invasion of Bonny Prince Charles. Dated 25 Nov 45 with Bishop's Mark & notated free. From G Wentworth to Alan Johnson, Attorney at Wakefield. Discusses fears in North from Jacobite invasion "seizing of arms & horses ... desertion of the County". Mentions "the Duke" (of York) with "considerable detachments of the guards" from Ligonier's Army. Tears along crease lines. Wentworth's one of the great families of Yorkshire and a flight of leading members before the Scottish invasion excited considerable comment at the time. George Wentworth is likely the 2nd son of Peter Wentworth of Henbury.
